Output Description:

The Intellectual Output 2 (IO2) is an interactive resource: adaptive teacher training material to support reflective practice through collaboration and communication between teachers, learners and academics. The resource will be used in an online workshop, in the multiplier events and in the courses C1 and C2 for teachers and C3 for teacher training students.

Reviews of research on teacher professional development programmes have highlighted how educating reflective practitioners can be effectively developed. In general, the reviews conclude that effective teacher training material should: (1) be based on evidence-based teaching strategies that effectively contribute to improving student outcomes, (2) provide ample opportunities to learn and apply these strategies, (3) include collegial interactions and learning from experts about teaching strategies in relation to student outcomes and (4) include systematic and continuous reflection on the effectiveness of these strategies on (changing) teachers’ daily teaching practice.

What is crucial in developing effective learning material enhancing reflective practice is that it is adapted to teachers’ existing knowledge. This means that teacher training should take into account the fact that considerable variations exist between teachers pertaining to reflective practice. However, current professional development programmes to enhance reflective practice a “one size fits all” model, according to which every teacher is supposed to learn the same thing, at the same time.

In this project an adaptive teacher training material to effectively enhance pre-and in-service teachers’ reflective practices in primary, secondary education and teacher education will be developed and evaluated. The adaptive material involves that the amount of support that a teacher needs for learning to deploy reflective practice, is matched with the complexity of using strategies for reflective teaching in his/her classroom. The use of videotechnology is particularly suitable for this purpose since it allows teachers to view, record and subsequently reflect on strategies that are judged complex and need a high-level of adaptive support from others, such as experts and/or peers. Using video is a crucial tool to foster this process since it enables observers (self or others) to experience and reflect on the same strategy in the same way at the same time and even repeatedly. Moreover, adaptive teacher training involves that given feedback should be specific, provide comprehensive cues about learning how to use strategies for reflective practice and should be timely. In this project video-reflection tools will be employed as their functionalities correspond to realizing adaptive teacher training material effective for enhancing reflective practice in teaching.

The aim of the project is to enhance teachers’ reflective practice by means of developing adaptive teacher training material that capitalises on the strengths of video-mediated reflection and feedback.

Lab 2 is responsible for Output 2. Lab 2 is a development group of 15 persons: 3 researchers (P1, P3), 1 digital expert (P4), 6 teacher educators (P1-P4), 3 teachers (P5) and 2 students (P2).
